Drexel's men's and women's teams have combined for a 5-1 record to open the 2013 season

Drexel’s men’s and women’s lacrosse teams hit the ground running at the open of the 2013 season. Both squads registered upset victories over nationally ranked programs and, through the first week of competition, they have a combined record of 5-1.

The Drexel women knocked off No. 11 Penn, 11-8, on Feb. 23, notching their first win over the rival Quakers since 1993. With wins over La Salle and George Washington to start the season, Drexel is now off to its best start since 2010.

Senior Kelli Joran has been a big part of the team’s early success, notching three goals in each of the Dragons first three contest. She was named Co-Player of the Week by the Colonial Athletic Association and Player of the Week by WomensLax.com for her outstanding efforts.

After coming up just short in a 13-12 overtime loss to national power Virginia to open the season, the men’s team has been playing some inspired lacrosse. A 20-19 win over No. 16 Albany on Feb. 23 vaulted the Dragons to a No. 14 national ranking and they defended the honor with a 12-10 victory over city rival Villanova on Feb. 26.

Junior Nick Trizano, who scored four goals against Albany to rally the dragons from a seven-goal deficit, earned CAA Player of the Week honors. His classmate Ben McIntosh, who also notched four against the Great Danes, leads the Dragons with 10 goals on the season.

The men will play Robert Morris in Pittsburgh on March 2 before returning to Drexel's Vidas Field to face Bryant on March 9. The women will be back in action against a pair of city rivals in the coming week, traveling to play Saint Joseph’s on March first and hosting Villanova on March 6.
