High school students interested in studying math in college can enter the Drexel University Department of Mathematics’ competition for a chance to win a $5,000 scholarship that could be worth up to $25,000, announced Dr. Hugo J. Woerdeman, head of the department.Tenth- to 12th-graders can log on to www.drexel.edu/coas/math/contest to fill out their name and address and take the eight-question test, which ends by asking, “Why would you like to study mathematics at Drexel University?” Students must use their knowledge of algebra to complete the problem set, Woerdeman said.The deadline to take the test is Oct. 23.The ten students who achieve the highest scores and provide the most compelling answer to the final question and their favorite math teacher will be invited to Drexel to participate in the Mathematical Association of America’s EPADEL (Eastern Pennsylvania-Delaware) fall conference Nov. 10.Those students will also take the second and final test in the competition. It will comprise four questions that require knowledge of algebra and trigonometry.
