Kline Law Professor David R. Hoffman, who teaches courses on patient safety and healthcare regulations, was featured in “How Nursing Homes Hide Profits While Residents Suffer,” an in-depth investigative story from VICE News. The piece centers around Life Care Centers of America, a company running for-profit nursing home facilities throughout the United States.
In the early 2000s, whistleblowers claimed that Life Care understaffed its nursing homes to increase profits and that residents suffered as a result. This ultimately led Life Care to settle a lawsuit with the Department of Justice and agree to a corporate integrity agreement.
As part of this agreement, Hoffman was appointed as a federal monitor to help improve resident care and safety in Life Care nursing homes. He was in the role from 2006 to 2010.
