The New York Times quoted Professor David S. Cohen in an article on abortion-rights advocates' decision to tailor their strategies to different states, following the appointment of conservative Justice Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court.
The Oct. 19 article explores efforts by pro-choice groups to challenge limiting measures adopted by some states and to strengthen women’s clinics in less restrictive states, noting that advocates previously focused on federal courts to uphold abortion rights.
The state-by-state strategy mirrors the approach that abortion opponents have used for years, particularly in the wake of the 2010 elections, Cohen said.
Cohen, an authority on gender and the law, is the co-author of a forthcoming book, “Obstacle Course: The Struggle to Get an Abortion in the United States,” which is scheduled for publication by the University of California Press in 2019.
