Vanity Fair Magazine Quotes Professor Norman Stein in Article on Mitt Romney’s Business Practices

July 06, 2012

Professor Norman Stein is quoted in an upcoming Vanity Fair article about the finances and business practices of GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

The article, “Where the Money Lives,” explores the personal finances of Romney and the business practices of Bain Capital, a firm the former Massachusetts governor co-founded.

Stein, a nationally known expert on pension and benefits law, is quoted about his interactions with employees of Dade Behring, a company Bain bought in the 1990s, when Stein directed the Pension Counseling Clinic at the University of Alabama School of Law.  In 1999, the article said, employees distraught by the erosion of their pensions and benefits under Bain’s influence turned to the clinic for help.

“I have been dealing with pensions issues for over 25 years and I never saw anything like this,” Stein said, recalling that the employees were so afraid of retribution by their employer that they did not allow the lawyers to photocopy their pension documents.

The article will appear in the August issue of Vanity Fair.
