Purtle Integrates Violence Prevention Efforts
Jonathan Purtle, MPH'10, is a graduate of the school's Executive MPH degree program and is currently a doctoral candidate in the school's Department of Health Management & Policy. He also works at the School's Center for Nonviolence and Social Justice alongside Dr. Ted Corbin and Dr. John Rich working with them on their programs to help address trauma and curb violence.
Most notably, Purtle has been working with Corbin on his recent Stoneleigh Foundation fellowship to evaluate the effectiveness of Healing Hurt People. Purtle is also working with Corbin to help create a new cross-disciplinary committee within the City of Philadelphia that explores the needs of victims of violence and how systems and services can be better coordinated to address the trauma of violence and prevent re-injury.
Corbin's fellowship focuses on enhancing the evidence base of Healing Hurt People and providing advocacy and leadership within Philadelphia to further galvanize support for a trauma-informed public health approach to violence.
The team hopes to receive additional support to expand their efforts beyond the Philadelphia region to create similar pilot programs in urban centers nationwide.
Purtle also writes about issues related to trauma and violence on The Public's Health—a public health blog and column with the Philadelphia Inquirer.
