Support for Multilingual Writers
University Writing Program
Multilingual writers have unique strengths and needs. The University Writing Program works with students and faculty to navigate the conventions of written English. We help them make informed choices that reflect their individual voice. We offer support for multilingual writers at any stage of their writing process. We encourage student ownership of texts through collaboration and negotiation.
We can help students with the following and more:
- Brainstorming and generating ideas
- Organizing, writing outlines
- Unpacking and understanding writing prompts and assignments
- Using sources effectively
- Avoiding plagiarism
- Identifying and revising grammatical errors

Our Approach
In accordance with the practices and positions of the Conference of College Composition and Communication, we:
- Recognize and support multilingual writers’ practices of integrating their unique linguistic and cultural resources into writing.
- Are sensitive to multilingual writers’ linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
- Use tutoring practices rooted in second language writing theories.

Undergraduate Students
Multilingual undergraduate writers can schedule an appointment with a Faculty English Language Learning Specialist or one of our specially trained Peer Readers.
Undergraduate multilingual writers will find support for their writing at any stage in the process from the Peer Readers and Faculty Reader English Language Learner (ELL) Specialists. Utilizing a collaborative approach to learning, tutors engage multilingual writers in conversation and negotiation of meaning while remaining sensitive to various cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

Support for Graduate Students
Multilingual graduate writers can schedule an appointment with a Faculty English Language Learning Specialist or one of our Graduate Consultants, who receive dedicating training.
Graduate multilingual writers will find support for various writing projects, like research papers, theses, dissertations, and articles for publication, from our Graduate Consultants and Faculty Reader ELL Specialists. Understanding graduate students’ challenges and concerns, consultants and specialists facilitate a collaborative environment and provide feedback that helps students achieve their writing goals.

Support for Faculty
The University Writing Program supports multlingual faculty in all areas of their writing and research. We also offer professional development workshops for faculty interested in learning appropriate methodology for teaching and assessing multilingual writers.
