First-Year Exploratory Studies

Prepare to choose your major with confidence

Drexel University's First-Year Exploratory Studies (FYES) program is designed to guide students in discovering their academic interests, assist them in their pathway to a permanent major, and help build a foundation for academic success. We achieve these goals by providing students with the resources to actively explore their options while also teaching them the essential tools and skills needed to thrive throughout their academic experience. This approach both solidifies the confidence of our students as they prepare for their educational career and life after Drexel. This program offers a structured yet flexible plan of study, allowing students to discover their interests and strengths while examining all that Drexel’s Colleges and Schools have to offer. By the end of the first year, students are prepared to transition into their chosen major with confidence and clarity, as well as remain on track to graduate.

Admissions Requirements

Students interested in the FYES program should apply through Drexel University's undergraduate admissions process. The program is open to first-year students who are undecided about their major or who want to explore several academic disciplines. Transfer students who have completed less than 26 semester credits and are looking to explore their academic options are also welcome to apply. Drexel’s academic advisers will work closely with transfer students to ensure that credits are maximized toward completing a degree on time.

Curriculum and Advising

The FYES program curriculum is tailored to provide a comprehensive educational experience that aligns with students' individual personal and professional goals. FYES advisers work with students to customize their course schedules to foster exploration and intellectual growth, ensuring that students gain a broad understanding of multiple fields. Through structured coursework and with the support of dedicated advisors, students have the opportunity to reflect on their own academic journeys and make informed decisions about their futures. Based on their interests, students have the option of exploring a variety of subject areas, including Science and Mathematics, Health, Nursing and Public Health, Social Sciences, Humanities, Computing and Technology, Business and Entrepreneurship, Media, Arts and Design, Education, Engineering and more.

Dedicated Activities

Learning at Drexel extends beyond the classroom. FYES students will engage in dedicated activities that enhance academic experiences and support personal development. These extra-curricular activities help students build connections with peers, make the most of what Drexel University has to offer, and become immersed in the city of Philadelphia. Past activities have included faculty-led panels on academic and professional pathways, trips to local attractions, group volunteering, tickets to sports games, study groups, and scavenger hunts around Philadelphia.

Experiential Learning

The Power of Integrating Knowledge

The philosophy of Drexel's College of Arts and Sciences and the way our community approaches education, research, and career preparation is encompassed by three key words: practical, interdisciplinary, and experiential. We offer students an education grounded in advanced knowledge along with the practical skills relevant in a modern, global economy. It is no longer enough to teach from just one perspective, as the world we live in requires a more nuanced approach. The interdisciplinary curriculum of our college combines the arts and sciences, producing a more well-rounded, better prepared “bilingual” student who is able to approach the complexities of society from a variety of perspectives.

Drexel University prides itself on offering 'hands-on' experiential opportunities early and often that provide students with the practical knowledge they need to succeed in their careers or go on to advanced study. FYES students can expand their academic development and enhance career-readiness through community-based learning classes, study abroad opportunities, research fellowships, lab and field work as well as co-operative education.

Research Opportunities

While the FYES program primarily focuses on exploration and academic discovery, students are encouraged to delve into research options that align with their unique interests. FYES students have access to all of the same undergraduate research and creative scholarship opportunities available to each of our College of Arts and Sciences students.

Drexel Co-op and Careers

One of the stand-out features of your Drexel experience is the renowned Drexel Co-op program. This unique cooperative education program allows students to gain real-world experience while earning their undergraduate degree. FYES students, like all other Drexel students, have access to co-op opportunities that enable them to apply classroom knowledge in professional settings, build a strong resume, and establish valuable industry connections. Depending on the major a FYES student declares at the end of their first year, they can participate in up to three co-op opportunities.
