Shakespeare Read-Aloud: Richard II
Wednesday, October 2, 2024
4:00 PM-5:00 PM
The Pennoni Honors College would like to invite you to another Shakespeare Read-Aloud for all interested students, staff, faculty, parents, and friends of the Pennoni Honors College. Hosted by outgoing Dean and Shakespeare scholar, Dr. Paula Marantz Cohen, we will read Richard II and discuss the play as we go along.
Richard II is a historical play that traces the downfall of King Richard II, whose ineffective and capricious rule led to his overthrow. After banishing his cousin Bolingbroke, the king seizes his estate to fund a war, sparking a rebellion. Bolingbroke returns from exile, gains widespread support, and forces Richard to abdicate the throne. The play explores themes of kingship, legitimacy, and the consequences of misrule.
