Generative AI in Health: Advancing Imaging and Language Applications

Wednesday, May 28, 2025

2:30 PM-4:00 PM

BIOMED Seminar

Title:
Generative AI in Health: Advancing Imaging and Language Applications

Speaker:
Yu Gan, PhD
Assistant Professor
Department of Biomedical Engineering
Stevens Institute of Technology

Details:
Generative AI is driving transformative change across numerous scientific and technological domains. In this seminar, I will present recent efforts from our research laboratory aimed at enhancing image visualization and analysis through data-driven approaches. Specifically, I will highlight how generative AI can be leveraged to synthesize novel information from offline datasets in coronary imaging—without the need for hardware modifications—enabling the reconstruction of data that was previously inaccessible or only obtainable through ex vivo methods.

The talk will also cover the development of robust image segmentation algorithms designed to produce high-quality labels for supervised learning in medical imaging applications. In addition, I will introduce our latest work on AI-driven chatbots for clinical information gathering and automated medical report generation. Finally, I will showcase our ongoing efforts in image processing to support tele-rehabilitation in intelligent visualization.

Biosketch:
Yu Gan, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology. He earned his PhD in Electrical Engineering from Columbia University. Dr. Gan directs the Intelligent Imaging and Image Processing Laboratory, where his research focuses on leveraging machine learning and deep learning to enhance biomedical imaging, reveal hidden information in medical images, and advance computational healthcare.

Dr. Gan's work has been supported by multiple funding agencies, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation (NSF), U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), New Jersey Health Foundation, Burroughs Wellcome Fund, and various industry
