BIOMED Special Seminar
Title:
2023 British Orthopaedic Research Society (BORS) / Bone & Joint Research (BJR) Traveling Fellows: Advances in Orthopaedic and Musculoskeletal Research Across the UK
Details:
Join us for an exciting seminar, where we will be hosting six academic Traveling Fellows from the United Kingdom, sponsored by the British Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS) and the Bone and Joint Research Journal. The group including engineers, orthopaedic surgeons and biologists from the University of Edinburgh, Imperial College London, Oxford University and Cardiff University. They are touring orthopaedic and musculoskeletal research labs throughout North America and Canada to share and exchange their latest research work. They will present various research topics including arthroplasty technology, ultrasonic cutting tools for orthopaedic surgery, developmental and musculoskeletal biomechanics, biomedical imaging, tissue engineering, clinical epidemiology, virtual surgical training, tissue biology, and more.
Of special note: the Fellows will be available all day to tour labs and meet with researchers interested in collaboration opportunities. Please contact Dr. Mark Schafer, if interested.
Speakers and Biosketches:
Mr. Simon Abram, Clinical Lecturer in Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Oxford, has research interests in the epidemiology of surgical interventions and making use of these data to develop clinical guidelines and patient information, with the aim of improving treatment selection and patient outcomes.
Dr. Nisreen Al-Namnam, Postdoctoral Research Fellow, University of Edinburgh, has a background in biomaterials for bone repair and tissue engineering. Her research interests include the new surgical techniques in bone cutting and distraction, effects on bone and cartilage produced by an ultrasonic cutting device, and simulation of bone repair with ultrasound.
Mr. Thomas Edwards, Clinical Research Fellow | Trauma and Orthopaedic Registrar, Imperial College London, has done research focused on improving outcomes for minimally invasive anterior approach total hip arthroplasty using innovative technologies, such as immersive virtual reality simulation. His research interest is using innovative technologies to improve the safety and efficacy of hip arthroplasty surgery. Most recently, he has focused on reducing learning curve complications for the anterior approach total hip arthroplasty.
Dr. Nidal Khatib, Post-Doctoral Research Associate, Imperial College London, has research interest in understanding the role of mechanical forces in skeletal tissue development and pathologies, such as osteoarthritis, with a view of developing regenerative therapies for skeletal repair.
Dr. David Williams, Post-Doctoral Research Associate, Cardiff University, has research interests in the application of medical imaging techniques, including MRI and video X-Ray, to understand the biomechanics of different synovial joints during everyday activities. Also, being able to quantify and understand the effects of disease and injury to different joints and to assess the efficacy of surgical and non-surgical interventions.
Dr. Irene Yang, Postdoctoral Research Fellow, University of Edinburgh, has a background in design and development of orthopaedic medical device technology. Her research interests are in the application of engineering techniques to improve orthopaedic care, with a current aim to build on her ultrasonic knowledge to develop disruptive technologies for orthopaedic surgery.
