The human visual system is an eye-brain system, closely connected to other sense modalities. Eye tracking has been used as a methodological framework with multiple facets, including recording and analyzing eye movements, identifying gaze locations and durations, pupillometry characteristics, and designing interactivity through gaze-contingent interfaces, both for medical purposes and social interaction research. The investigation of systematic patterns in the control of gaze has been a major methodology in various domains of experimental research, including reading, dyadic communication in multimodal settings, and communication between humans and robots/avatars.

In this talk, I will introduce current research trends and challenges in eye-tracking research and expectations for eye-tracking research in the future. The topics will include the relationship between eye movements and the visual attentional system, hardware and software for conducting eye-tracking experiments, the design and development of interactive systems, the research that employs eye-tracking for hypothesis testing, data collection, cleansing, analysis and visualization, the taxonomy of eye movement events, eye-tracking measures, and multimodal integration with human physiological measures.

Finally, sample studies will demonstrate how eye-tracking methodology is used in natural settings, in particular scene perception, expertise, oculomotor control in reading, and human-robot interaction.
 
Biosketch:
Cengiz Acartürk, PhD, is a faculty member at the Cognitive Science Department of Jagiellonian University, Krakow, Poland, and Cognitive Science and Cybersecurity Graduate Programs of the Informatics Institute, Middle East Technical University (METU), Ankara, Turkey, recently. He received PhD from Hamburg University, Institute Knowledge and Language Processing Institute, Center for Intelligent Systems and Robotics (ISR), Department of Informatics, in 2010.

Dr. Acartürk has been conducting eye-tracking research in various domains for the past 15 years. His current research interests cover eye-tracking applications, group eye tracking, oculomotor control in reading, cybercognition, and human factors in cybersecurity. He has taught graduate courses on visual cognition, psychology of reading, AI, and machine learning at the Cognitive Science Program. Dr. Acartürk has taught the following courses at the Cybersecurity Graduate Program: Cybersystems and information security, human factors in cyber-physical systems, research methods, statistics, and ethics for cybersecurity. He has organized departmental seminars in cognitive science and cybersecurity.

Dr. Acartürk has been involved in evaluating European Union H2020 MCSA FET OPEN and MCSA IF/PF projects as an expert reviewer and a vice-chair. He has served as an editorial board member at the Journal of Eye Movement Research, Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences, and New Ideas in Psychology, besides serving as a program committee member for numerous national and international conferences.
