BIOMED Seminar

Title:
Impact Innovation and Med-Tech Entrepreneurship

Speaker:
Mihir Shah
Founder and CEO
UE LIfeSciences Inc.

Abstract:
In this talk, Mihir Shah will discuss impact innovation and med-tech entrepreneurship in relation to his core expertise in bringing disruptive innovations to life for the many and developing relationships with public health departments and clinicians from around the world.

A case study in impact innovation and med-tech entrepreneurship took root in August 2012 when Mihir authored and won the prestigious Commonwealth Universal Research Enhancement (CURE) grant award ($878,000 USD) from the Pennsylvania Department of Health to develop a hand-held, point-of-care and mobile phone-connected breast scanner (iBreastExam™). Since then, his company has raised $4M+ in venture funding and grants awards. iBreasrExam has received US FDA clearance and has completed clinical validation studies in the US and India.

Mr. Shah will also discuss how he is creating a sustainable ecosystem comprised of public health agencies, corporates with CSR support, and thought-leaders in oncology and global health. As a testament to this approach, the iBreatExam test is now being offered to women in India for under $2 per test. Mihir is also the force behind the “WeMustTry” and “TheLoveCurve campaigns, bringing breast health examinations to thousands of women, many for the very first time.

Biosketch:
Mihir Shah is a med-tech entrepreneur driven by highimpact innovation. He is passionate to help address health disparities affecting billions of people in the developing world. With more than 12 years of dedicated experience in bringing innovative science from academia to clinics in the form of mobile health technologies, Mihir strongly believes in frugal innovation for the many. In 2009, he founded UE Lifesciences (UELS) in Philadelphia to lead the effort in bringing early detection of breast cancer to geographies where the incidence of breast cancer is rising and where the western model of screening is unadaptable. A computer engineer by training and a socially-motivated entrepreneur by profession, Mihir leads a multidisciplinary team of scientists, clinicians, engineers and entrepreneurs.

Under Mihir's leadership, a handful of innovations have reached the clinic. UE LifeSciences' first product, NoTouch BreastScan received US FDA clearance and CE mark as a touch-less and radiation-free imaging device for breast cancer detection. It is now commercialized in more than 7 countries; 3 clinical studies (US, UK and India) have been published and thousands of women have received the test in cities such as Mumbai, New York, Istanbul, Mexico City, Colombo, and Dubai.
