General Inquiry Cover Letter Guide

General employment inquiries can be much more challenging than applying to specific job postings within a company. However, if you find a company of interest that does not have any relevant positions advertised, a general inquiry cover letter is how you can both inquire about employment opportunities and promote your employability. Submitting a strong cover letter with your résumé is important to strengthen your inquiry. The guide below is to get you started on writing your cover letter. Remember to edit and revise your letter for each organization you pursue.

Schedule an appointment with a Steinbright staff member or attend a cover letter workshop to learn more about crafting effective cover letters or to have your cover letter reviewed.

Dear Mr./Ms./Dr. Last Name of Receiver,

Paragraph 1 – Introduction
Tell the reader why you are writing and the type of the position you are pursuing. If you are seeking a co-op position, you may need to describe the Drexel co-op program. If you have a networking contact at this company, you should refer to that person in the first paragraph. Remember, the first paragraph of a cover letter should spark the interest of the reader.

Paragraph 2 – Experience
Provide a concise overview of your qualifications. Detail past experience and how the skills you have developed make you a good candidate for employment within the organization. Refer to your résumé, but do not summarize it. Focus on one or two skills that correspond with the role you seek and the organization.

Paragraph 3 – Interest
Explain why you are interested in the organization. Include information you have gathered about the organization and how it relates to your career plans. Explain why this company is a good fit for you by relating your knowledge, skills, and abilities to their mission and goals. Be sure to highlight any specific divisions or training programs where your skills would be best suited.

Paragraph 4 – Closing
Thank the receiver for reviewing your résumé and considering you for a position within the organization. Indicate that you would appreciate an opportunity to discuss the position in further detail at a later date.

Sincerely,
