Resources for Non-native English Speaking Dragons
September 10, 2018
College is hard enough — it shouldn’t be made harder for those who English isn’t their first language. To support such students, Drexel University offers a number of resources and programs through both the English Language Center and the Drexel Writing Center.
English Language Center (ELC)
- International students can sign up for tutoring and language support for tips and practice in everything from speaking and listening to reading comprehension and study skills.
- Academic courses taught by ESL faculty are also offered to allow students the opportunity to build skills in speaking, listening and academic writing — all for credit. There are even augmented courses for students needing ESL support in the freshman humanities sequence.
- The Center’s Intercultural Community Bridge also aims to support ELC students outside of academics by connecting them with University faculty and staff, fully matriculated Drexel students and members of the Philadelphia community with the goal of fostering intercultural competence and appreciation. For more information, contact communitybridge@drexel.edu.
- Native English-speaking students interested in learning other languages can get involved by joining the Center’s Conversation Network. This unique opportunity for language and cultural exchange allows ELC students practice English while helping English speakers learn a second language. Who knows, you might even make a new friend in the process!
- Make sure to check out the ELC’s forthcoming fall programming calendar, and email elctutoring@drexel.edu with any questions.
Drexel Writing Center (DWC)
- The DWC works closely with the ELC to provide comprehensive services, most notably the Language, Writing and Research (LWR) Initiative, also created in collaboration with Drexel University Libraries. This initiative offers help with speaking, writing and researching in English with accordance to western academic tradition. Interested in this service? Contact lwr@drexel.edu.
- Additionally, the DWC has specialists who provide face-to-face and online tutoring for ESL students — including graduate tutors who specifically work with ESL graduate students. All of the Center's peer readers are trained in working with ESL students, as well. Register to make an appointment here.
