Drexel University will honor the legacy of pioneering NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson, whose contributions to the space shuttle program were chronicled in the award-winning film “Hidden Figures,” and the work of women and people of color she inspired to be today’s leaders in science, technology engineering and math, at a panel discussion on March 6. The event will be the first in Drexel’s President's Speaker Series highlighting leaders in diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.

Preterm births Proactive Policing May Contribute to the Racial Gap in Preterm Births
Proactive policing, such as pedestrian and traffic stops, is a crime prevention tactic that relies on police officer discretion to stop and search individuals they consider suspicious. A recently published study in the journal of the American Public Health Association, looking at proactive policing and preterm birth rates in New Orleans, shows that Black residents living in neighborhoods experiencing high levels of proactive policing were about three times as likely to give birth preterm (before 37 weeks) as their white neighbors.
Microbes Play a Key Role in Unleashing ‘Forever Chemicals’ from Recycled-Waste Fertilizer
“Forever chemicals” are everywhere — water, soil, crops, animals, the blood of 97% of Americans — researchers from Drexel University’s College of Engineering are trying to figure out how they got there. Their recent findings suggest that the microbes that help break down biodegradable materials and other waste are likely complicit in the release of the notorious per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) into the environment.
