Free Drexel Ice Cream for Dragons on April 10
Last term, Nora Vaughan, a culinary arts and science major in the Center for Food & Hospitality Management, created the winning flavor in a Drexel University-themed contest held with local ice cream parlor Franklin Fountain for an ice cream that best exemplified Drexel. The flavor is “Dragon’s Breath,” which is saffron- and orange-infused vanilla ice cream with cinnamon and pistachio honeycomb.
This Wednesday, April 10, Vaughan and the co-owners of Franklin Fountain will distribute that ice cream for free (first come, first serve) to 500 Drexel faculty, staff and students. The event will be held at 3 p.m. in Behrakis Grand Hall.
“Dragon’s Breath” will be sold at the Franklin Fountain throughout the month of April, and Dragons with a Drexel ID can receive a 30 percent discount.
After winning the ice cream contest at a tasting event held at the Center for Food & Hospitality Management’s Academic Bistro on Feb. 27, Vaughan worked with Eric Berley, who owns Franklin Fountain with his brother Ryan and was a judge in the contest, and Daphne Macias, chef at Franklin Fountain who was also a judge, to further develop the ice cream to be sold in large quantities for retail. She also met with Pavia Burroughs, Franklin Fountain’s graphic designer, who presented ideas on labeling the packages.
