Summer is finally here, and while Drexel campuses are a little quieter, Drexel’s Department of Public Safety (DPS) continues to diligently promote campus safety. In this issue, we introduce public safety operations on the Queen Lane Campus of the Drexel University College of Medicine (DUCOM). Read on to register for the R.A.D. self-defense summer session and refresh your general knowledge about safely enjoying summer barbecues and outdoor celebrations.
GETTING TO KNOW THE QUEEN LANE CAMPUS
The DUCOM Queen Lane Campus is located in East Falls, a neighborhood that sits northwest of Philadelphia’s city center. DPS maintains a presence on this campus with one full-time police officer, 24/7 assistance from Allied Universal security officers and additional security support as needed.
As the Queen Lane Campus sits remotely from Drexel’s other campuses, the police officer on duty relies on around-the-clock correspondence with the Philadelphia Police’s 39th District and security units at the neighboring Thomas Jefferson University East Falls and the William Penn Charter School. These stakeholders all meet regularly to exchange information about current campus safety matters. Through the cultivation of stakeholder relationships and transparent communication with Queen Lane students and employees, DPS works hard to ensure that safety needs are met.
The Twitter account @queenlanecop is operated by the Queen Lane Campus police officer and provides daily safety updates around the campus. A student or employee can request a walking escort to their vehicle parked on campus by calling the Queen Lane Campus Security Office at 215.991.8102.

MEET OUR QUEEN LANE OFFICER: MORGAN MEEHAN
Morgan Meehan is the full-time police officer on duty for the Queen Lane Campus. Meehan has been a police officer for the past 33 years, the first 25 as an officer in Woodbury, New Jersey. Meehan understands the importance of his role not only as a police officer but also as a community representative and advocate. Establishing genuine relationships with students, faculty and professional staff is essential for Meehan to succeed in his role. He strives to be sympathetic to the diverse needs of the people and communities he protects.
When not on campus, Meehan is a busy family man, devoting his time to his three sons, wife and Goldendoodle. He embraces his mediocre golf game with pride, makes time to play the trumpet, and rides his Harley Davidson Road King with friends.
COMMUNITY COMMITMENTS
Request an Official Report or Record
The public can now more easily request a police report or record from DPS by completing and returning an Incident Request Form. Types of reports provided include vehicle accident reports or incident reports that may relate to a crime that was committed or an injury that occurred on campus. UPCOMING EVENTS
Register for the R.A.D. Self Defense Program
The summer R.A.D. series begins on July 8. Registration is required, and you must attend all four weekday classes to complete the program. Visit the Drexel Public Safety website for the complete schedule and to register.
16th Police District Promise Zone Community Fun Day
July 19, 5–8 p.m.
39th and Olive Street Playground
The Drexel Police Department is collaborating with the 16th District for this community event. Members of the Drexel community are welcome to attend. Activities will include face painting, basketball competitions, horse rides and pool fun.
SUMMER FUN SAFETY TIPS
With the summer solstice just behind us, the days are now long and hot! Whether you are relaxing in a park, fishing in the mountains or catching some sun at the beach, stay safe and healthy by following some simple tips below.
Hot Weather Safety
- Sun Protection: Apply thick layers of sunscreen to all exposed skin. Reapply as necessary.
- Hydration: Increase your water consumption. Dehydration can hit before you realize it.
- Severe Storms: Register for weather alerts through a weather app or local municipal alert system.
- Insects: As with sunscreen, be diligent with using insect repellents. Check your skin and scalp for ticks after prolonged outdoor activities.
Barbecue Safety
- Propane and charcoal grills should only be used outdoors.
- Grills should be placed in open areas and never left unattended.
- Use lighter fluid sparingly on charcoal grills, if at all.
- If you smell gas while cooking on your propane grill, immediately move away from the grill and call the fire department.
Fireworks
- Home-use fireworks are dangerous and should be avoided altogether. Attend a public community display instead.
- Check local laws prior to use of fireworks.
- Even sparklers can cause serious injuries. They can burn at temperatures near 1,200 degrees.
