R.A.D. logo

The R.A.D. System provides self-defense courses for women and men, teaching the basics of hands-on defense training taught by certified R.A.D. instructors. R.A.D. manuals are provided to course participants, outlining the entire physical defense program.

The R.A.D. defense courses listed below are held on campus and are free to members of Drexel campuses and the immediate community. Identification is required. Some materials maybe required for purchase. All classes will be held at Drexel University. For information, contact Karen Sams at 215.895.1609 or kjs52@drexel.edu.

In addition to the physical-defense programs, instructors can also provide 1-2 hour seminar presentations on personal safety and awareness for those who are interested in learning more about reducing their risk of victimization, but who may not be able to commit to the time required to complete a course.

Basic Physical Defense (12 hours)
The cornerstone of R.A.D. Systems, this program provides a system of realistic defense to help women to make educated decisions about resistance. This course will educate women about risk reduction strategies and the "Fight or Flight Syndrome." Participants will learn about personal weapons, vulnerable locations, postures and the many options to employ if engaged in an aggressive encounter. This program is a minimum of 10 hours of training and will be a total 12 hours with simulation.

Advanced Self Defense (25 hours)
This system of defense builds upon techniques and strategies learned in the Basic Physical Defense class. This program covers more defense strategies and multiple subject encounters. Participants must have already completed the Basic Physical Defense course prior to taking Advanced Self Defense.

Keychain Defense Options (4 hours)
This course is one of the only realistic and court-defensible impact weapons programs available for the general public. This program combines proven R.A.D. Basic Physical Defense strategies with revolutionary impact weapon defense techniques. Realistic employment, combat effectiveness, "light impact," fluid transitions and even simulation training exercises are all part of this program. This program is a minimum of three hours. Participants must have already completed the Basic Physical Defense course prior to taking Keychain Defense Options.
**Classes are scheduled upon request for groups of five or more.

Physical-Defense Programs for Men

Basic Physical Defense (12 hours)
This program will present options to resist aggression. You will be asked to raise your awareness of aggressive behavior, recognize how aggressive behavior impacts your life, take steps to avoid aggressive behavior, and look at how you can be part of reducing aggression and violence. Unfortunately, in a small number of incidents, physical confrontation may be unavoidable. Therefore this program also provides participants with realistic strategies for men forced into physical confrontation. This program is designed to empower men to make different decisions when confronted with aggressive behavior. This is the first step towards reducing aggression and violence. This program is a minimum of 10 hours of training and will be 12 hours with simulation.
**Classes are scheduled upon request for groups of five or more.
