Heard Around Campus — February

Heard Around Campus

Sure, February has fewer days than other months, but Drexel University still put together a packed schedule of recycling events and other opportunities for faculty and staff.

Here's what was heard around campus this month.

President’s Faculty Social Hour

Don’t forget! March 1 is the President’s Faculty Social Hour from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Bossone Research Enterprise Center Lobby at 3120 Market St. RSVP here.

Recycling at Drexel: Do’s and Don’ts

RecycleMania 2018 is at the midway point! We all know recycling is the right thing to do, but it’s not always clear what’s the right way to do it. Here are some basic “do’s and don’ts” of Recycling at Drexel:

  • DO recycle plastics #1-7 (#6 if hard plastic only), such as food, beverage and toiletry containers
  • DON’T recycle plastic bags. Our vendor can’t process them — but many grocery stores will accept them

  • DO a quick rinse on containers. It’s OK to leave the labels on. Remove caps when possible
  • DON’T recycle containers with a significant amount of liquid and food inside, or soiled napkins and tissues

  • DO recycle paper, junk mail, magazines, paper bags, newspaper and paperback books
  • DON’T recycle paper coffee cups, as most are not recyclable. Opt for a reusable travel mug instead

  • DO recycle cardboard. Light cardboard, such as cereal boxes, can be placed with regular paper. Heavy cardboard can be placed next to hallway recycle bins in academic/administrative buildings or in designated residence hall trash rooms
  • DON’T recycle Styrofoam, soft #6 plastics or packaging materials such as bubble wrap

Creating a Narrative of Professional Involvement (CANOPI)

As announced in a Feb. 19 email from the Office of the Provost, the Office of Faculty Affairs is accepting applications for the spring 2018 session of CANOPI, a 3:1 mentee/mentor model that facilitates the development of professional involvement narratives for Drexel faculty members.

Space is limited, and we encourage faculty who wish to take advantage of the program to apply by March 2. For questions, contact the Office of Faculty Affairs at facultyaffairs@drexel.edu or 215.895.2141.

Drexel Mail Service, Changes Effective Feb. 19

Diversity & Inclusion Spotlight: Drexel Athletics

If you’ve ever felt uncomfortable getting changed in a communal locker room for any reason — whether it’s a matter of your personal preference, gender identity, religion or culture — Drexel Athletics has good news: In 2017, the Daskalakis Athletic Center (DAC) began offering a single-use, all-gender locker room to all DAC and Recreation Center users. Located on the main floor of the DAC near the men’s locker room, the single-use locker room (room #142) features a bathroom, shower, and day-use lockers. No reservations are required to use the room, but use is limited to 15 minutes at a time in consideration of others.

“We’re really trying to put inclusion at the crux of everything we do, whether it’s our programming or facilities,” said Bryan Ford, assistant athletic director for recreation. “We want to make sure everyone feels welcome to participate in recreational athletics, regardless of culture, religion or gender identity.” As part of this commitment, Athletics professional staff in several departments have attended LGBTQA+ Ally training, and both staff and student-athletes attended a 2017 talk on “Confronting Ourselves: Promoting Diversity, Cultural Competence, and Inclusive Excellence” by Derek Greenfield, a speaker, consultant and author on diversity and inclusion.

This Diversity & Inclusion Spotlight was excerpted from the FY2017 Diversity Achievement Plan Accomplishments Supplement, an annual report celebrating the diversity and inclusion-related achievements of each of Drexel’s academic and administrative units. You can view the FY2017 Supplement here. For general questions about diversity and inclusion initiatives at Drexel, please contact the Office of Equality & Diversity at oed@drexel.edu.
