Dragons from yesteryear returned to campus earlier this month to reconnect, check out old haunts and get a glimpse at what’s new at Drexel since their graduation.

At this year’s Alumni Weekend on May 1 and 2, the Drexel University Alumni Association welcomed hundreds back to campus.

“What a great weekend," said Ira Taffer, BS '79, PhD '83, chairman of the Alumni Board of Governors. "There were so many fun events; we had something for everyone. Drexel after Dark was the perfect party to wrap up the weekend.”

Friday kicked off the weekend with a breakfast, pinning ceremony and class photo for the Golden Dragon Class of 1965, which celebrated its 50-year Drexel Reunion. The Class of 1965 enjoyed catching up with one another and seeing how campus has changed — for some it was their first time back in half a century.

A highlight on Friday night was the Alumni Association’s outdoor Night Market for faculty and staff alumni in Perelman Plaza. Guests played games like giant Jenga, Twister and Connect Four, and snacked on food-truck style treats including a make-your-own-popsicle station!

Additionally, on Friday, the Black Graduate Student Union held its own Alumni Gala to celebrate the organization’s five-year anniversary.

“The event was so fun,” said Kamau Wright, the current president of the Black Graduate Student Union. “It was well-attended, the food was good, the music was great, the photo booth was a big hit and, most importantly, this multigenerational group of guests expressed excitement at being welcomed back to Drexel in such a personal way.”

Throughout the day on Saturday, Drexel’s colleges and schools held open houses, brunches, tours and lunches all around campus, and special-interest alumni groups held mini-reunions.

The weekend closed with a bang at Drexel After Dark, where more than 340 alumni and their guests danced the night away in the Main Building, which was transformed into Drexel Through the Decades.
