Macy's CEO Terry Lundgren will join Drexel University’s Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design on May 28 as the recipient of the third annual Westphal Award and the 2014 Design & Merchandising Distinguished Speaker.

The Westphal Award, named in honor of Antoinette Westphal, a Drexel graduate and longtime supporter of the College, is awarded to a leader in one of the many fields of design, media and arts taught at the Westphal College.

The award is given to honor not only the recipients’ business and creative success, but also their humanitarian efforts to inspire and nurture the next generation of leaders. It has previously been awarded to Burberry CEO Angela Ahrendts and Neiman Marcus Fashion Director Ken Downing.

The award ceremony and Lundgren's lecture on fashion, merchandising and the world of retail will take place Wednesday, May 28 at 6:30 p.m. in the Screening Room in the URBN Center Annex (3401 Filbert St). A reception will follow. For more information about attending, call 215-895-1029.

“Terry Lundgren is clearly one of the most influential members of the retail community on both the national and international stage,” said Allen Sabinson, dean of the Westphal College. “We are honored and thrilled that he will share his experience and insight with Drexel students, faculty and the Philadelphia community at large.”

Macy’s also is in the process of undergoing a $400 million renovation to its flagship store in New York City. As the world’s biggest department store, this landmark is one of New York’s most popular tourist destinations, drawing more than six million visitors a year.

Lundgren began his retailing career in 1975 as a trainee with Bullock’s, a Los Angeles-based division of Federated. He held positions of increasing responsibility over the next decade in buying, store management, human resources and senior-level store management, as well as serving as the division’s director of stores. Lundgren was named senior vice president and general merchandising manager of Bullock’s in 1984. In 1987, he was named president and chief executive officer of Bullocks Wilshire, then an upscale chain of specialty department stores owned by Federated.

Lundgren left Federated in 1988 to join Neiman Marcus, where he served as executive vice president and shortly thereafter was named chairman and chief executive officer. He returned to Federated in April 1994 as chairman and chief executive officer of the Federated Merchandising Group. Macy's, Inc. is the parent company of Macy's and Bloomingdale's, and was known as Federated Department Stores, Inc. prior to June 1, 2007.
