Drexel University has named Michael W. Marion, EdD, as the next executive director and associate vice provost of Drexel University Sacramento. Marion will replace Sandra Kirschenmann, who announced her retirement effective Sept. 1.
Marion is dean of student services and counseling at Cosumnes River College. He is a well-regarded educational administrator with experience in two- and four-year colleges and universities on both coasts and has a strong international background. He has been a member of Drexel’s adjunct faculty for the past year, teaching students in the Master of Science in Higher Education program. He will begin his tenure at Drexel Sacramento July 1.
“Sandy has built an outstanding foundation at Drexel Sacramento, and in Mike Marion we have found an energetic, innovative and well-connected leader to continue the momentum,” said Drexel President John A. Fry.
Marion has established a reputation as a leader among young professionals in Sacramento. He is the incoming chairman of Metro EDGE, the young professionals division of the regional Chamber of Commerce, and he graduated from the Nehemiah Emerging Leaders Program as well as the Sacramento Entrepreneurship Academy.
His career began in student affairs at San Diego State University, his alma mater for undergraduate and master’s studies. He also worked at Los Angeles City College and the University of Southern California, where he received his doctorate in education. In 2008 he joined Radford University in Virginia as associate dean of students, before returning to California and Cosumnes River College in 2010.
“Our excitement at having Mike join Drexel follows the bittersweet news that Sandy Kirschenmann will be retiring and moving to Atlanta,” said Drexel Provost Mark Greenberg. “Sandy’s leadership has been indispensable in establishing Drexel Sacramento as a trusted, engaged provider of high-quality graduate and undergraduate education.”
The many accomplishments of Drexel Sacramento under Kirschenmann include the first baccalaureate program at the center; the successful introduction of co-operative education in the Sacramento region; the establishment of career services for Drexel Sacramento students; a strong collaborative relationship with Kaiser Permanente health care providers that led to a new northern California clinical rotation option for Drexel Med students; and a major expansion in the strength and capacity of Drexel’s Sacramento Board of Advisors, which grew from fewer than 10 members to more than 30.
