Dragons Win CAA Lacrosse Championship

Rookie Cole Shafer gave Drexel its first Colonial Athletic Association Men's Lacrosse Championship with a goal in the triple overtime against Hofstra in the title game. The win punches Drexel's ticket to the NCAA Tournament.

Shafer's goal was his fifth of the game, leading the Dragons in a game in which Drexel trailed by three goals with five minutes to play. The Dragons, for the second game in a row, launched a tenacious rally to knot the contest at 10-10 and force overtime.  Shafer, Nick Trizano and Ryan Belka all scored in the final minutes of play, with Belka's goal evening the game with just under three minutes remaining.

Each team had a scoring chance in the first two overtime periods. Drexel keeper Will Gabrielsen came up with a big save in the second overtime to preserve the tie and set up the Dragons' thrilling victory. Gabrielsen recorded a game-high 13 saves.

Senior Ben McIntosh, the league's player of the year, was also named Most Valuable Player of the CAA Tournament.

The victory was Drexel's eighth straight and sends the Dragons to their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Drexel will face University City rival Penn on Sunday, May 11 at 3 p.m. at Franklin Field in the first round of the tournament.
