It’s almost time for one of the biggest events on the calendar for Drexel graduate students: Graduate Student Day.
Graduate Student Day is a special event hosted each year by the Office of Graduate Studies (OGS) and Graduate Student Association (GSA) to honor graduate students for excellence in research, teaching and graduate student spirit, as well as graduate student organizations that have done outstanding work this year.
This year’s event is set for 5-7 p.m., Friday, May 30, in the Great Court of the Main Building on the University City Campus. All graduate students, faculty and staff are welcome and encouraged to attend. The event will include remarks and an awards ceremony, followed by an appetizer reception.
In addition to honoring graduate students, the GSA will also recognize faculty and professional staff members who have gone above and beyond their roles to mentor and advocate for the graduate student community this year. The GSA is inviting graduate students to nominate faculty or staff mentors for that honor in advance of the ceremony.
Winners of the Research and Outstanding TA awards will be notified before the ceremony.
After the formal ceremony and reception, festivities will continue for graduate students. The GSA will host an End-of-Year Blowout benefit from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. that evening at Soundgarden Hall (Spring Garden Street and Columbus Boulevard). The benefit will feature two DJs from the radio station Wired 96.5, Mijo and Ric City, as well as the College of Medicine’s own DJ NAJ.
Food and drinks are included with tickets, which will be $10 for graduate students and $20 for guests. Tickets will be available online starting at 3 p.m. May 2.
Shuttles will return attendees to Center City and University City from midnight to 2:30 a.m. All graduate students, as well as alumni and guests, are invited.
Proceeds from the benefit will go to Spells Writing Lab, a Philadelphia-based nonprofit organization that develops the creative and expository writing abilities of school-age children through free, fun and imaginative writing programs and teacher development opportunities.
