Men’s Basketball Opens CAA Tournament on Saturday vs. George Mason

Men's basketball CAA Tournament 2013

The postseason begins for the Drexel men's basketball team this Saturday afternoon at the Richmond Coliseum. The Dragons will face the George Mason Patriots in the opening round of the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament beginning at 3:30 p.m. The game can be seen live on The Comcast Network.

Drexel enters the postseason coming off back-to-back wins. The Dragons finished 9-9 in CAA play after winning at Old Dominion and defeating UNC Wilmington on Senior Night at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Damion Lee leads the Dragons in scoring, averaging 17.4 points per game. The sophomore is among the CAA’s leaders in scoring and three-pointers per game. Frantz Massenat is second in the CAA in assists and averages 14.6 points per contest. If the Dragons are to move on, they will need big games from their two All-CAA guards, but will also need help from their seniors. Derrick Thomas and Daryl McCoy have played well as of late and could be the keys if the Dragons make a run in Richmond.

The Patriots are one of the deepest teams in the CAA. Sherrod Wright averages more than 16 points per game and shoots 36 percent from three-point range. He is one of four George Mason players who shoot well from long distance. Vertrail Vaughns, Patrick Holloway and Corey Edwards are all shooting better than 36 percent from beyond the arc. Edwards makes 48 percent of his attempts, while backcourt mate Bryon Allen leads the CAA in assist-to-turnover ratio. The teams split their regular-season series this year with each winning on the opponent’s court.

The winner of Saturday's game will move on to the CAA semifinals to face Northeastern. The Huskies won the CAA regular-season title and earned an opening-round bye. The semifinal game will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday and will be broadcast on the NBC Sports Network. The three-day tournament will be held at the Richmond Coliseum in downtown Richmond.
