Drexel Expert Available to Comment on Gay Marriage Cases Before the Supreme Court

David S. Cohen, a constitutional law and gender issues expert and an associate professor at the Earle Mack School of Law at Drexel University in Philadelphia, is available to comment on the Supreme Court taking up the historic gay marriage battle this week.

In Cohen’s opinion, “The Supreme Court has a clear choice with the two cases before it this week: rule for equality and be on the right side of history or rule for bigotry and be remembered with the infamous Courts that have approved of slavery, segregation and Japanese internment.”

“There is only one correct decision in both cases. The Constitution requires that everyone be able to marry the person they love and that governments cannot discriminate against people based on sexual orientation,” said Cohen. “Whatever the Supreme Court does, the country is clearly moving in a direction approving of same-sex marriage. The Supreme Court needs to act to do justice now, but even if it doesn’t, justice will arrive.”

Cohen's publications include articles in the Harvard Journal of Law and Gender, George Washington Law Review, Indiana Law Journal, Boston University Law Review, the South Carolina Law Review and the Columbia Journal of Gender and Law. His previous scholarship looked at Title IX protections against sex discrimination as well as race in the criminal justice system.

Cohen received his J.D. from Columbia University School of Law, where he was named a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar and received the Public Interest Commitment Award and two Columbia Human Rights Fellowships. He was managing editor of the Columbia Human Rights Law Review and articles editor of the Columbia Journal of Gender and Law.
