The Wellness Council of America has awarded Drexel University the Well Workplace Gold Award for fully embracing its responsibility to maximize the health and well being of its employees. Drexel is the only college or university and one of only 49 organizations nationally to win a 2013 Well Workplace Award.

Welcoa’s Gold-Level award recognizes organizations that are developing comprehensive workplace wellness programs that produce results and are a strategic and integral part of the organization.

“Drexel’s approach is to provide all our employees, as well as our students, with the tools necessary to achieve physical, emotional and financial wellness,” said Jim Tucker, senior vice president for student life and administrative services. “This award is an important milestone toward our goal of becoming one of the healthiest universities in the nation.”

In a Well Workplace Award-winning organization, the vision of protecting and enhancing the health and well being of each and every employee becomes part of the very fabric of the organization — not something extraneous and peripheral to the core business functions, according to Welcoa.

Drexel’s A Healthier U program is aimed at everyone, including full-time and part-time employees, adjunct faculty and more than 24,000 students and provides numerous opportunities for improving health and well-being, such as a walking club, meditation group, workshops and weight management programs. Drexel also offers Proactive Health, an integrated onsite wellness model for working professionals located in the state-of-the-art Drexel Recreation Center. Proactive Health utilizes the expertise of the University’s Department of Nutrition Sciences, as well as master fitness trainers and massage therapists from Drexel Athletics, to provide a holistic approach to better health through personal exercise programming, nutrition counseling and therapeutic massage.
