Internationally recognized clinician in pediatric diseases Dr. Daniel V. Schidlow has been appointed Walter H. and Leonore Annenberg Dean and senior vice president, medical affairs at the Drexel University College of Medicine. Schidlow will assume the role from his current position as interim dean and senior vice president. 

“In his eight months as interim dean, Dr. Schidlow wholeheartedly embraced this role, tackling both existing and new challenges with innovation and professionalism,” said Drexel President John A. Fry. “As the University and its College of Medicine continue to grow in both quality and impact, I have complete confidence that he will be the ideal leader to guide the College of Medicine in the years to come.”

In his new role, Schidlow will lead Drexel’s nationally recognized College of Medicine, with more than 2,000 medical and graduate students. After conducting an extensive national search, Schidlow clearly emerged from the pool of extremely talented applicants as the candidate with the best balance of strategic thinking, broad experience, deep humanity and commitment to the College of Medicine’s mission of research, education and clinical practice, according to search committee chair and Drexel trustee Mary R. “Nina” Henderson.

Schidlow has cultivated a strong relationship between the College of Medicine and its partner Tenet Healthcare, making significant progress in developing programs and joint hires that have coalesced the two organizations. He has also helped unify the College of Medicine’s Queen Lane and Center City campuses, actively participating in student and faculty events and activities and spending significant time in both settings.

A leader in the study of cystic fibrosis and pulmonary conditions in children, Schidlow is board certified in both pediatrics and pediatric pulmonology. As the principal investigator for numerous research studies, Schidlow has co-authored more than 180 publications and has given lectures around the globe. He has received many prestigious accolades and awards for his contributions to medicine and education, including the 2010 Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching and Philadelphia Magazine’s America’s Top Docs of Philadelphia honor in 2011.

Schidlow has been with the College of Medicine since 1994, formerly serving as professor of pediatrics, pharmacology and physiology, and chair of the department of pediatrics. Previously, he served as physician in chief at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia, where he played a critical role in more than doubling the number of faculty, establishing strategic partnerships for the hospital and producing high-quality clinical and academic programs.
