Estimating the Likely Economic Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Philadelphia
By Dr. Kevin C. Gillen
As state and local stay-at-home mandates to limit the COVID-19 spread continue in Philadelphia, the city's economy is seizing and the effects of the widespread shutdown remain to be fully understood. In this presentation and research piece, Senior Research Fellow Kevin Gillen applies the results from the peer-reviewed research of the economic impacts of the last major flu pandemic, the "Spanish Flu" of 1918-1920, to the current COVID-19 pandemic, in order to determine the potential magnitude of the virus's and ongoing quarantine's economic impact on Philadelphia.
