Food Access

Winter 2026

This group focused on the topic of food access. One student in the group wrote: "After collecting these thoughts for myself all that was next was bringing it together with my group for it to become a semi reality, working with my peers on designing a resource was seamless, we went at it partially divide and conquer as we all stepped forward with our own piece of information that was then used to combine into our grander mural. One of our members was a stronger artist than most but the rest of us became ultra vocal with all the ideas we had in order to make sure it was never too much of a workload for one member. Decisions were formed through majority decision, although with it being a mural every idea was capable of fitting the only things being debated were where they were to be placed and which items were to take center stage.

As I stated before, my grander focus was on the topic of EBT, its government restrictions and how it's used by those who don't have the greatest location in order to get the healthy food that would so benefit the average quality of living. My contribution came in the form of the suggested EBT card on our mural, and the minor signings below covering government sanctions, the others came together individually deciding on a bridge between more fortunate and less fortunate locations and a general sprout in the middle prophesizing of a better future to come.
A conceptual collage illustrating social and economic challenges in an urban community. On the left, a row of aging brick row houses and a tent encampment symbolize housing insecurity and homelessness. In the center, two hands attempt to connect puzzle pieces above a small green plant growing from soil, representing collaboration, recovery, and community growth. At the bottom are icons of individuals, a group of people, and a government building, suggesting public policy and social support systems. On the right, a vibrant outdoor produce market displays fresh fruits and vegetables beneath a canopy, while an EBT card with a warning symbol highlights concerns about food assistance programs and access to affordable nutrition.
