In Memory of Professor John M. Reid
June 25, 2023
In Loving Memory of Professor John M. Reid. A pioneer in Biomedical Engineering, his contributions to the field remain unparalleled. With his warm and friendly demeanor, Professor Reid's impact extended far beyond his research.
Dr. Reid's pioneering work in ultrasound imaging and tissue characterization has garnered national and international recognition. Together with John J. Wild, MD, he achieved a breakthrough in 1952 by introducing a non-invasive technique for breast cancer diagnosis using high-frequency ultrasound waves. His expertise and dedication in this field have laid the foundation for advancements that continue to benefit countless lives.
Professor Reid was highly admired and respected by his peers. He was extremely supportive of all of his colleagues, especially younger faculty, and made a real effort to understand the concerns of those working with him. He was always available for professional and personal assistance.
As an exceptional teacher, pivotal mentor to many, and globally recognized scholar, Professor Reid joined Drexel University's School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems in 1980 (then, the Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Science). As the inaugural endowed Calhoun Chair Professor, he guided and inspired numerous students who now carry his legacy forward.
Our heartfelt condolences to Professor Reid's wife, Shadi, and his family and friends, as well as to the academic community. May his visionary work and compassionate spirit continue to inspire generations to come.
