Title:
Predictive Modeling in Healthcare Informatics

Speaker:
Christopher Yang, PhD
Professor
Director, Healthcare Informatics Research Lab
College of Computing and Informatics
Drexel University

Details:
Data science, artificial intelligence, and machine learning have drawn significant attention in healthcare recently. Heterogeneous data sources including electronic health records, clinical notes, sensors, and health consumer generated data, are acquired to support accurate predictive modeling in healthcare. We'll discuss a few applications of predictive modeling in this seminar. In addition, we'll discuss the explainability and fairness of these models.

Many advanced artificial intelligence algorithms such as deep learning are very accurate in prediction, especially in medical imaging. However, these algorithms are considered opaque. It is difficult to explain the outcomes of the prediction to users. Fairness in AI is a pressing issue. Given the biases in data and algorithms, the predictive models may reproduce existing inequities or embed new bias or discriminations. It is harmful to our healthcare systems. We will discuss a few approaches of mitigating unfairness.

Biosketch:
Christopher Yang, PhD, is a professor in the College of Computing and Informatics at Drexel University. He also has a courtesy appointment at the School of Biomedical Engineering, Science, and Health Systems. He is the director of the Healthcare Informatics Research Lab. His recent research includes pharmacovigilance, drug repositioning, predictive modeling of sepsis, predictive modeling of disengagement driving for injury prevention, heterogeneous network mining, distributed graph computing, health intervention through social media for substance use disorders, and social network analytics.

Dr. Yang is currently on leave and serving as the program director in the Division of Intelligent and Information Systems (IIS), Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE), National Science Foundation. Before his leave, he was the Founding Director of Data Science Programs and the Program Director of MS in Health Informatics. His research interest includes data science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, healthcare informatics, social media analytics, electronic commerce, and intelligence and security informatics. Dr. Yang has over 350 publications in top-tier journals, conferences, and books, such as ACM Transactions on Intelligent Systems and Technology, ACM Transaction on Management Information Systems, IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, IEEE Transactions on Computational Social Systems, PLOS One, Journal of Medical Internet Research, Artificial Intelligence in Medicine, and more. He has received over $6.5 million in research funding from NSF, NIH, DoD, PCORI, HK RGC, among others.

Dr. Yang is the editor-in-chief of Journal of Healthcare Informatics Research and Electronic Commerce Research and Application. He is the editor of the CRC book series on Healthcare Informatics and the founding steering committee chair of the IEEE International Conference on Healthcare Informatics. Dr. Yang has been the general chair of over 5 conferences and program chair of over 10 conferences.
