Part One: How to Identify What It Is You REALLY Want

Part One: March 14, 2018

Sometimes we think we know what we want, but when we look deeper, we realize that we’ve confused the outcome (our “strategy” for getting what we want) with the unfulfilled human need or desire that is motivating us to want a certain outcome. In this session, we will dig deeper into basic human needs that often pop up in the workplace (such as respect, satisfaction, autonomy, purpose and meaning) and the strategies we can use to fulfill these needs. We will also learn to distinguish between ‘what we do’ (strategies) and ‘why we are doing it’ (needs) so that our communication can become less tense and more open.

Understanding this discernment will open up new possibilities in your work and in how you communicate. Grasping this distinction can help you become more creative in thinking up strategies that you may have never considered before.

As you cultivate more creativity and possibility, you will begin to develop greater flexibility and freedom when relating to others.  And, as a bonus, these creative new strategies usually result in you feeling greater joy and more satisfaction, and also getting more of whatever it is you really want.

Part Two: Finding Empathy While Feeling Frustrated

Part Two: March 28, 2018

Building on what we learned in session one, we will now turn our attention to the other people we are in relationship with at work.  We will talk about how to constructively find ways to connect to what is truly important to someone else (their needs) even when we are feeling frustrated (or confused, or disappointed). Learning how to cultivate this connection, and learning how to respect and parse out the needs of ourselves AND the needs of our colleagues or boss, will give us greater opportunity to reduce conflict without being angry or resigned. Maintaining this connection to ourselves and to others will allow us to negotiate difficult topics more easily.

Our speaker Dr. Terrie Lewine started her health care career in 1997 doing transformational bodywork known as Network Chiropractic. She has been facilitating Nonviolent Communication (NVC) workshops since 2007.  Having studied with leading trainers all over the country, including Marshall Rosenberg, PhD, she also offers private coaching to individuals and couples to help them create the lives/relationships they say they want.  NVC, mixed with a deep understanding of neurology and physiology, and other relationship skill building practices, her work in uniquely successful.
