Guidance for Instructors on Classroom Masking

Dear Colleagues,

As announced in Monday's message from the Return Oversight Committee, Drexel will become mask recommended in our academic spaces, and in all indoor public areas except for health care settings, effective September 6. Drexel continues to recommend wearing high quality, well-fitting masks when indoors and around others. However, consistent with public health guidance in the context of a heavily vaccinated campus, indoor masking is no longer required after September 6. After this time, instructors are not permitted to require nor request that a student wear a mask in class outside of a health care setting.

I understand that some faculty members have concerns about this policy update based on their individual situation. Drexel continues to require full vaccination for all on-campus students and employees and will provide high-filtration masks at several locations upon request. High-quality masks worn correctly and regularly will significantly reduce the risk of viral transmission, even if others around you are not masked. Instructors with concerns should speak with their department head to determine if the issue can be addressed within the department.
