Inspiring Little Dragons to Dream at Drexel
Every year, Drexel University hosts its annual Inspire A Child to Dream Day — the University’s version of the national “Take Our Daughters And Sons To Work®” program — for the children and relatives of Drexel faculty and professional staff to come to campus.
At the 2019 event held April 25, 166 Dragons, aged 6–12 years old, spent their Thursday at the University, rather than their elementary or middle schools, to participate in hands-on fun and educational activities organized by different Drexel colleges, departments and programs.
During the morning part of the daylong event, the little Dragons were split up by age to participate in different activities. These young learners heard about gardening and healthy eating from the Center for Food & Hospitality, played basketball with the University’s men’s and women’s basketball teams and participated in an egg-drop over at the Lindy Center for Civic Engagement in which they packaged a vessel to successfully drop an egg without breaking it. Members from Drexel’s music industry, nutrition, materials engineering, dance and digital media programs also hosted the children for hands-on activities, as did members of Public Safety, Athletics, the Drexel Writing Center, Student Life, the College of Nursing & Health Professions and the LeBow College of Business.
After a fun morning, the little Dragons enjoyed lunch at Behrakis Hall (where they had first gathered to eat breakfast earlier). Student members of the Drexel African Fusion dance team then led a brief performance and workshop for the children. Afterwards, parents accompanied their children to the Academy of Natural Sciences, where they solved a special scavenger hunt around the museum and attended a live animal show.
All in all, about 100 Drexel faculty and staff members volunteered during Inspire A Child to Dream Day to help the day’s events run smoothly.
