Wawa to Open New Store at Drexel University on Sept. 21
Good news for Drexel Dragons who are fans of Wawa hoagies, coffee and just about anything else related to America’s best convenience store chain: a new Wawa store will open on Drexel University’s University City Campus on Sept. 21.
Located at 3300 Market St., this Wawa will open its doors to the public at 7 a.m. A grand opening ceremony officially starting at 8 a.m with a ribbon cutting ceremony and a charitable hoagie-building competition. Coffee will be free that Friday and all weekend in celebration of the grand opening, and there will be new Drexel-inspired hot and cold specialty beverages available on the opening day.
The Wawa on Drexel’s campus will be the company’s newest and largest urban design prototype in Philadelphia. The 8,760-square-foot location will feature seating both indoors and outdoors, as well as other unique design features. Additionally, the store will offer delivery through GrubHub, Uber Eats and mobile ordering on the Wawa app — new features that will definitely help Dragons move more quickly through their day.
During the opening ceremony that Friday, the Wawa Foundation will formally announce the expansion of their support and partnership with the A.J. Drexel Autism Institute. Wawa will help fund research widening the availability of evidence-supported interventions for young children showing early signs of autism, such as a study about the effectiveness of a video-training library for parents with recently diagnosed children and a special pilot program introducing evidence-based autism interventions into daycare settings in lower resource communities.
“Wawa’s support is critical to our being able to continue this very important line of research which is intended to extend the reach of autism early intervention services,” said A.J. Drexel Autism Institute Director Craig Newschaffer, PhD.
That morning, Wawa will also demonstrate its service and commitment to local communities with a special “Hoagies for Heroes” hoagie building competition. The Drexel University Police Department will go head-to-head against the Philadelphia Fire Department and a student volunteer EMS team to build the most hoagies in just three minutes — and they’ll have to prepare the hoagies in the traditional Wawa way, of course. At the end of the event, Wawa will donate $1,000 to the charities of choice for the winners and runner-ups.
The opening of the new Wawa at the University City Campus couldn’t have come at a better time — after all, the new academic year officially starts just four days after the official opening.
