Award-winning theater and opera director Robert Wilson will present a lecture and performance today at 7:30 p.m. in Drexel University’s Mandell Theater. Wilson’s visit will provide an intimate look into his creative process and astonishing aesthetic universe.The lecture and performance, entitled “1. HAVE YOU BEEN HERE BEFORE 2. NO THIS IS THE FIRST TIME,” will focus on Wilson’s personal experience as a visionary in the world of experimental theater.The New York Times described Wilson as “a towering figure in the world of experimental theater and an explorer in the uses of time and space onstage. Transcending theatrical convention, he draws in other performance and graphic arts which coalesce into an integrated tapestry of images and sounds,”Wilson increasingly concentrated his creative efforts on reinvigorating the operatic repertoire with his productions of Parsifal in Hamburg (1991), Houston (1992), and Los Angeles (2005), The Magic Flute (1991), Madame Butterfly (1993) and Lohengrin at the Metropolitan Opera in New York (1998 & 2006). Wilson recently completed an entirely new production, based on an epic poem from Indonesia, entitled I La Galigo, which toured extensively and appeared at the Lincoln Center Festival in the summer of 2005. Wilson is also internationally known for his drawings, furniture designs, and installations, which have been exhibited in the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and the Guggenheim Museums in New York and Bilbao.
