10 Must-Do’s While at Co-op

By Megan Holmes

The Drexel University co-op program is a major reason why prospective students around the country, and even around the world, choose Drexel University. During co-op, some students are working to uncover new scientific discoveries while others are practicing their newscast in front of a television camera and everything in between. Year in and year out, students get the chance to practice in the professional field what they’ve learned in their classroom. While students may not be studying for an exam, there is still so much to learn on the job. Here are 10 ways, recommended by the Steinbright Career Development Center, to be sure that you get all you can out of your time during your co-op.

  1. Be curious and ask questions.
  2. Set goals both personally and with your supervisor.
  3. Target and learn a new skill.
  4. Talk to people and get to know them.
  5. Join a committee and interact with co-workers in a new way.
  6. Save cell phone use and internet surfing for you break or lunchtime.
  7. Observe officer operations and adopt the preferred communication methods.
  8. Know the dress code, time off, emergency notification and performance evaluation policies of your workplace.
  9. Seek out feedback, integrate it and act on it.
  10. Keep in touch with your co-op advisor – you’re still a Drexel student while on co-op!
