Fearing Being Mistaken for Criminals, People of Color Shy Away From Homemade Face Masks

Sharrelle Barber, ScD, an assistant research professor in the Dornsife School of Public Health, was quoted in an April 8 Raleigh News & Observer story about structural inequalities causing the pandemic to disproportionately impact communities of color. The story was also published April 8 by the Fresno Bee, Fort Worth Star Telegram and other newspapers nationwide. Barber was also quoted in related articles April 7 in Debate (Mexico), and April 9 in Ecowatch and Refinery 29 about a disproportionately high percentage of African Americans testing positive for COVID-19.
