Edward Kim, PhD

Edward Kim
Associate Professor of Computer Science

Kim’s research centers on the application and ethical design of artificial intelligence and machine learning, focusing on machine perception and computer vision. He also works to raise awareness of implicit bias in algorithms.

Kim leads Drexel’s SPARSE Coding Lab in the College of Computing & Informatics. His team studies a type of artificial intelligence called sparse coding modeled on the behavior of the mammalian brain. Their goal is to develop an AI system that learns in a way similar to an infant – by observing the world and learning through observation.

In addition to publishing and presenting extensively on sparse coding and neuromorphic computing, Kim has commented in the media on problems and challenges surrounding the use of algorithms and artificial intelligence and received a university grant to raise awareness of racial and gender bias in algorithms.
