Robert I. Field, PhD JD

Professor of Law, Professor of Health Management and Policy, Director of JD-Master of Public Health Program

Field is a nationally known expert on health law and public health whose research focuses on ethical issues in managed care, public policy and legal facets of healthcare reform and genetic screening. He holds a joint appointment as professor of law in Drexel's Kline School of Law and professor of health management and policy at Drexel's Dornsife School of Public Health. He is also a lecturer in health care management at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

In his most recent book, "Mother of Invention: How the Government Created “Free-Market” Health Care" (Oxford University Press, 2013), he makes the claim that the government cannot “take over” American health care – as many Obamacare opponents fear – because it has been running the system for decades. Field believes that Obamacare is a natural next step in the country’s health care evolution rather than the government takeover that critics claim it to be. Field also is the author of "Health Care Regulation in America: Complexity, Confrontation and Compromise," a comprehensive guide to the government's role in regulating health care, published by Oxford University Press. He writes a regular blog, The Field Clinic, on health reform and health policy for the Philadelphia Inquirer: http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/fieldclinic/.
