Zhiwei Chen, PhD

Assistant Professor of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering
Nick Howley College of Engineering and Computing

Chen is an expert in modeling and predicting the impact of changes to transportation systems, such as highways, subways and buses. His research includes social impact analysis focused on efficient, equitable, sustainable and resilient transportation systems.

In addition, Chen has been studying the deployment of connected autonomous vehicles in urban settings for several years and has published extensively on the technology and system components that will enable safe and efficient movement of self-driving vehicles.

Chen’s research group takes an interdisciplinary approach to studying transportation systems, drawing on social science, machine learning, optimization, and control theory, with the goal of producing data-driven and analytical models that can inform decisions around transportation systems that are likely to have a broad societal impact. He is currently working with the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission to evaluate how future transportation plans could affect public health, social equity, and the regional economy.
