Drexel University Online’s virtual Test Drive allows potential students to test out Drexel’s virtual learning environment for a week, at no cost before they apply. The course received the 2016 University Professional and Continuing Education Association Mid-Atlantic Region Marketing & Promotions: Electronic Development Award.
Created in part to address common anxieties around online education, the Test Drive allows students to take part in collaborative, threaded discussions with Drexel faculty and staff; submit practice assignments; and learn more about individual programs, admission requirements and support services.
“For many, the idea of completing a degree or certificate entirely online is still a bit intimidating,” said Susan Aldridge, PhD, president of Drexel University Online (DUO). “But having a chance to explore technology-enhanced education with others who have the same questions and concerns makes it easier to decide if it’s truly a good fit. And that’s an important factor in determining their long-term success.”
The Test Drive was developed by Kimberly David-Chung, assistant vice president for Virtual Student Experience. “For prospective students, the ‘Test Drive’ often serves as their first affinity group at Drexel, allowing them to virtually meet other people who share similar backgrounds and academic interests,” said David-Chung. “Engaging with other like-minded individuals really helps reduce the anxiety of returning to school, allows them to share their excitement and concerns with the Drexel community, and lets them take a low-risk actionable first step towards realizing their dream.”
Since launching its pilot program in December 2014, DUO has registered close to 4,500 students in its Test Drive. What’s more, data shows that prospective students who take part in this event are, on average, twice as likely to enroll (38.3 percent) in a Drexel online program than those who do not (19.7 percent).
