Drexel Men’s Ice Hockey Team Will Play First-Ever Game at Wells Fargo Center

For the first time ever, Drexel’s men’s ice hockey team will play at the Wells Fargo Center during a game against the University of Delaware on Nov. 23. The match, held at 1 p.m., will be played prior to the Philadelphia Flyers game scheduled that day against the Carolina Hurricanes. 

“This is a huge event for the ice hockey program. We continuously strive every year to put a winning product on the ice and one that our students can be proud of,” said Kyle Zoldy, ’13, head coach of the team.

The last time that the team played at a major sports arena was in 2012, when the team played on Citizens Bank Park when the baseball field was transformed into an ice rink for the Flyers to play in the NHL Winter Classic game.

“We’re all excited that we get to play this game as kind of our last shot in our senior year. I grew up in Reading, so I’ve been watching the Flyers play my whole life. My brother once skated on the ice during the in-betweens of the game but I’ve never had the opportunity to skate in the arena until now,” said Zachary Kantner, a senior environmental science major and the team’s starting goalie.

Zoldy hopes that the big event will help gain fans and recognition for the team, which is not recognized as a varsity sport.

“I think this a great opportunity to show our school spirit and get excited about an athletic event. We hope to represent the University to the best of our ability and hopefully get the fans a win,” he said.

A win at Philadelphia’s premiere hockey arena would also give Drexel a notch up against their rivals at the University of Delaware.

“We have played Delaware consistently in the past but we didn’t actually have a game with them scheduled for this year. This will definitely help keep the rivalry alive. It is not a playoff game but it will surely be played with that level of passion and intensity,” said Zoldy.

So far this season, the team’s statistics are at 5-9-0.

“Although our record is not where we would like it to be we have created a very tough out-of-conference schedule, with our last six games being against nationally ranked opponents,” said Zoldy.
