Welcoming New Dragons to Drexel

Drexel’s brand-new Welcome Week is pulling out all the stops to get new Dragons up to speed on living, learning, working and playing on the University’s campuses and in Philadelphia.

“We want our new students to really see what Drexel is all about and be excited for their career here at the University,” said Subir Sahu, PhD, associate vice president and dean of Student Life.

Kick-Off Celebration

With the new students moving into their residence halls on Saturday, Sept. 12, Sunday, Sept. 13, is being set aside for a kick-off event celebrating students’ arrival.

Resident assistants will bring groups of Drexel students to Center City via SEPTA to the Pennsylvania Convention Center, where doors will open at 1 p.m.

Beginning at 2 p.m., students, will be treated to a high-energy presentation showing off the Drexel difference and featuring a photobooth experience, music, videos, performances and a few surprises that remain top secret as of posting. 

After the celebration ends at 3:30 p.m., students will be able to take advantage of being downtown and explore.

College and School Day

For the first time as students, freshman and transfer Dragons will be invited to check out the individual colleges and schools that they’ll be attending. 

Information about starting classes and resources will be available.

Additionally, students can meet their new professors and get to know classmates they’ll be learning alongside for the next several years.

Events Around Campus

Throughout the rest of the week, Drexel is hosting some fun events to pass the time and make friends before classes begin.

Among those are activities like a neighborhood scavenger hunt, allowing students to meet neighboring residents, check out local businesses and get familiar with Drexel’s Dornsife Center for Neighborhood Partnerships.

The Campus Activities Board will lead students to Spruce Street Harbor Park, introducing them to a summertime hangout on the Delaware River featuring food, games, hammocks and even a roller rink.

Negin Farsad will come to the Mandell Theater Sept. 15. Named one of the 50 funniest women by Huffington Post, Farsad will talk about comedy and its role in social justice, which she feels may now be more important than ever.

Open Arts 101 will provide students with an idea of the different cultural opportunities throughout the city available to Dragons.

Getting to Know the Basics

Some events will focus on just day-to-day life at Drexel.

SEPTA will come in to present on the various options it offers to navigate the city for work and fun.

The Fall Merchant Fair at Creese Student Union will feature the 80-plus businesses on the DragonCard network so students can learn about the deals they have access to. 

And one quick course sponsored by the School of Public Health will simply let students know some ways to avoid picking up a cold from their roommates.

A Kickstart to the Drexel Career

All in all, Drexel’s Welcome Week will serve as a way for students to get comfortable on campus.

At the end of it, students will have a better idea of where they are, who they’re with, and how to get started making a Drexel difference in their lives.
