Drexel’s Intercultural Community Bridge Program Seeks New Members

Intercultural Community Bridge Program

Do you enjoy meeting new people and learning about different cultures? Do you enjoy sharing your interests, hobbies and expertise with others? Drexel University’s Intercultural Community Bridge program, now in its second year, is looking for caring and open-minded members of the Drexel community to share their knowledge of Philadelphia’s people, culture and lifestyle with Drexel International Gateway students.

The Community Bridge program provides participants with opportunities to learn about different cultures as well as a chance to share their unique experiences with others.

“This program is an incredible experience for all participants,” said Bethany Fallon, an ESL instructor and Community Bridge program manager in Drexel’s English Language Center. “It doesn't matter if you are a student, employee or community member, you are going to learn and form lasting relationships.”

Participants are placed into “community families” that consist of International Gateway students (Drexel’s conditional admittance program), matriculated students and a Drexel employee or Philadelphia community member.

“I cannot recall how many topics we had talked about, but I felt that our conversations were fun and helpful,” said International Gateway student Vanessa Zhou. “We shared our culture, opinion and confusion. We asked for advice and we did not feel embarrassed.”

The groups meet once a month from October to May. The families decide on and plan their own activities for each month.

“Becoming a part of the Drexel Community Bridge program has been one of the most rewarding experiences,” said Douglas Dilhomick, a community member. “While spending time and connecting with family members, I realized very quickly that I had made lifelong friendships. There was never a dull moment during our meets. I will cherish these memories for a lifetime.”
