As provisions of newly enacted health care reforms begin to take effect, few areas in the United States will feel the impact of the new law more directly than Philadelphia. On October 22, 2010, the Earle Mack School of Law and the School of Public Health at Drexel University will co-sponsor a daylong conference, “Health Care Reform in Philadelphia: the View from the Trenches,” that will feature industry insiders’ take on the new law and its impact on a major sector of the regional economy. In Greater Philadelphia, more than 283,000 workers – more than 1 in 10 – are employed in health care delivery, in addition to those employed in manufacturing medical devices, biotechnology or pharmaceuticals, according to a 2009 report by the Milken Institute of Santa Monica, Calif. “The conference will take a broad view of key segments of the health care industry,” said Professor Robert Field, who holds a joint appointment at Drexel’s law and public health schools. “Philadelphia has a special interest in health reform. It isn’t just our health; it’s our jobs that are affected.”While the news media has focused on public perception of health reform, industry insiders have critical insights to share, said Professor Barry Furrow, director of the Health Law Program at the law school. Ann S. Torregrossa, director of the Pennsylvania Governor’s Office of Health Care Reform, will give the keynote address, and panels throughout the day will focus on the impact of health reform on public health, on physicians, on hospitals, on clinics and on insurers, as well as consumers.
