The inaugural class of the Earle Mack School of Law will graduate on May 27 in a ceremony that celebrates both student achievement and the innovative approach Drexel University has taken to legal education. The 7 p.m. ceremony at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts will feature a keynote address by former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, who will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. The class features graduates from 21 states and six foreign countries who played a significant role in helping the school get started and in forging relationships with legal practitioners in settings that include law firms, corporations, government agencies, public-interest organizations and the courts. The conferring of 160 Juris Doctor degrees caps an exhilarating three years for Drexel Law, which has generated excitement throughout the legal community for infusing its curriculum with experiential learning opportunities that prepare the graduates to enter the profession with savvy. The inaugural class arrived on campus before the law school had received provisional accreditation from the American Bar Association, a measure of the students’ confidence in Drexel’s vision for an excellent and distinctive program in legal education. They were quickly immersed in an academically rigorous program that boasts a faculty that is experienced and accomplished in both legal practice and scholarship. The ABA conferred provisional accreditation just 18 months after Drexel Law opened its doors – the earliest opportunity allowed under association rules. Drexel Law’s commencement will draw many members of the Philadelphia legal community, who have been partners in helping to prepare this pioneering class.
