Drexel University and Haddonfield Memorial High School have entered into a new partnership that will enhance the curriculum of HMHS and expand student opportunities to take advanced-level and college-credit courses. This is the first-of-its kind partnership that includes free college-level courses for high-achieving students and online classes, as well as mentoring and faculty-training programs. “We are looking forward to working with Haddonfield Memorial High School,” said John DiNardo, Drexel vice provost for academic affairs. “This partnership will allow the high school to diversify its already rigorous curriculum.”Under the partnership, Drexel will open its Visiting Scholars program free to HMHS students. The Visiting Scholars program is a highly selective program that allows high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors to register for college courses - on a space-available basis - at Drexel’s University City Main Campus while completing high school. Visiting Scholars will receive full college credit for all work completed with a passing grade and a Drexel transcript. HMHS students will also have the opportunity to register for online Drexel classes as visiting students and then receive tuition credit their freshman year if they choose to attend the University. These opportunities will be available to HMHS students as early as fall 2009.If eight or more Haddonfield students are interested in a course, Drexel would consider offering a section just for them. A HMHS hybrid course taught by Haddonfield faculty will also begin in fall 2009 with the support of Drexel. HMHS faculty will have access to Drexel’s online training team and professional development offered at the University.HMHS administrators and faculty will also receive professional development and insight on how to incorporate technology into their coursework, and Drexel will work with the high school to develop special undergraduate classes for students. According to DiNardo, these may come in the form of special programs during the summer. Planning for a pre-engineering summer program to begin in spring 2010 is underway. Traditionally Drexel has attracted a pool of HMHS students who respond well to Drexel’s demanding academic curriculum, according to Joan McDonald, senior vice president for enrollment management. These students have an average 3.5 GPA or higher and a combined math and reading SAT score of 1200 or higher.Founded in 1891, Drexel is the nation’s 16th largest private university and is ranked as one of the nation’s most innovative universities by US News & World Report. Drexel is widely recognized for its focus on experiential learning through its co-operative education program, technology and use-inspired research.Students at HMHS strive for excellence in a rigorous college preparatory program. More than 96 percent of students continued their education at the post-secondary level in 2008-2009. New Jersey Monthly ranks Haddonfield the only South Jersey high school in the top 25 high schools in the state ranking HMHS 14th among 315. Philadelphia Magazine has cited HMHS as one of the finest schools in the region on 11 different occasions, and this year ranked it 4th in the region. Newsweek listed Haddonfield Memorial High School as one of the best public high schools in the nation in 2007.
